Supernatural Studio One is a mineral molding paste and ground for artists, designers, and creators. It applies to any stable surface. It goes on thin as a surface preparation or builds texture in layers, holds every peak without sagging, and cures into real stone rather than the rubbery acrylic finish of conventional mediums. It sands to silk when dry and accepts pigment, fine carving, paint, charcoal, pen and more. It contains no plastic binders, no VOCs, harmful synthetic chemicals, or carcinogens. Studio One comes as a pre-mixed paste.
-
Conventional molding pastes and gessos rely on acrylic (plastic) binders and cure to a flexible, rubbery film, while Supernatural Studio One mineralizes as it cures and hardens into calcium carbonate. Thick, the result is a rigid, toothed, stone. Thin, the surface has some flexibility. Both surfaces sand smooth and take pigment incorporated into the material or can be colored on top with paint, charcoal, pens or other water-based color. It also contains no harmful synthetic chemicals, no VOCs and no carcinogens, so it’s healthy for the people working with it every day.

Apply Supernatural Studio One to a prepared or unprepared clean stable surface with a palette knife, trowel, mottling brush or spatula, building texture in layers. It holds its shape without sagging and can be manipulated both while wet and while damp. Build higher by letting each layer set before adding the next. The “Application and Cure Time Basics” tutorial walks through the full process.
-
When applied thin, Supernatural Studio One dries in 1-2 hours. Thicker applications can take days to dry and should always be applied in layers, allowing each to dry before applying the next. Drying and curing are different stages: drying is the surface firming up, while curing is the material fully mineralizing to its final hardness. Drying can take hours or days depending on thickness. Material can be colored or sanded once dry. Curing is when CO2 is sequestered and can mineralize over the course of months. Thickness and studio conditions can affect the timeline of both the dry and cure.

Yes. Supernatural Studio One accepts water-based pigment like mineral paints, acrylic, gauche, casein, mixed directly into the paste. Studio One can also be colored once dry with paint, charcoal, pastels, pencils, pens and any other water-based media. You can build custom shades from subtle, muted tones to bold neon while keeping the texture and stone-hard finish intact. The “How to Add Pigment” tutorial shows the mixing process and how pigment load changes the final color.
-
Yes. Tinted or natural Supernatural Studio One can be pulled through stencils to create crisp, high-contrast pattern and graphic detail. The “Paint, Pigment and Stencils” tutorial demonstrates clean, controlled results.
-
Supernatural Studio One works on stable, prepared or unprepared surfaces such as canvas, wood panels, metal, glass, papier mache, found objects of all kinds - as long as the surface is stable - as shown across the tutorials. Get creative with your surface! For best results the surface should be free of dust and particulates before application.
-
Yes. Supernatural Studio One contains no plastic binders, no VOCs, harmful synthetic chemicals, and no crystalline silica, is Prop 65 compliant, and it is LHAMA compliant under ASTM D-4236. Thorough toxicological testing found no chronic toxicity issues. High alkalinity serves the only safety requirements which are to avoid contact with eyes and ingestion. Prolonged skin contact should be avoided due to irritation. Do not inhale dusts. The formulation was built around studio health safety from the start rather than retrofitted for it, which matters most for the artists and makers who work with it day in and day out.
-
The Studio Line is LHAMA compliant under ASTM D-4236 February 2026, with performance testing conducted in-house against ASTM standards over the course of three years of diligence. Studio One was incorporated into the rigorous Parson’s Healthy Materials List in May 2026. The underlying technology has been independently reviewed by the UC Berkeley Disaster Lab and approved by John Warner, the cofounder of green chemistry. The patent has received international acknowledgment through the WIPO Patent Cooperation Treaty, with the broadest claims confirmed as novel.

Always cover material directly for freshness and to preserve its consistency, using the seal liner that comes with the package or Saran Wrap. It will never mold but if not properly covered it will begin to cure. Store at room temp. Too hot could cause evaporation, affecting consistency. We don’t suggest freezing but our testing has not resulted in issues with freeze/thaw.
-
No seal required for longevity or performance; but optional given preference for look.
-
No. We don’t suggest outdoor use, and can’t vouch for topcoat brands and their efficacy if used as a sealant for Studio One outdoors.
-
Yes, please sand and feel how it is transformed to a silky finish. Any grit sand paper works; sand carefully and gently by hand not machine. Only carve with manual handheld files.
-
Yes it does create highly alkaline dust that isis harmful if it gets in eyes, and is a skin irritant, inhalation irritant . Wear protective eye wear and gloves. Don’t inhale. Sand in well ventilated areas. Don’t sand near animals or children.
See SDS (link) for full safety guidance and a 24 hour phone number that can be called if any issues arise.
-
Wipe often to avoid curing onto materials, wipe after use and wash immediately with soap and water. If it dries onto your tools, scrape it using another palette knife.
-
It does not smell like synthetic chemicals as there aren’t any in its composition. It does have a scent though - similar to “earthen, aquatic, clay”. It’s natural and smells like it!
