I went looking for a material that didn't exist.

I was designing furniture. Pregnant, with a two-year-old beside me. And somewhere in the middle of specifying finishes, I understood that every material on my list would outlive my children in a landfill.

I stopped. For months I couldn't move the project forward.

I'd spent my whole career using these materials. As an artist, as an architectural designer, on job sites, in furniture factories. I had never once interrogated them. Now I couldn't stop. Most art mediums are plastic. Most wall compounds carry crystalline silica, classified in the same category as asbestos.

Nobody chose this. It was simply the default, set decades ago by people optimizing for one thing.

And the industry's answer was a tradeoff: performance, or something better for you and the planet. Pick one.

I didn't accept the terms.

So I found a scientist who didn't either — Tom Vermeeren, thirty-five years in materials — and we started mixing. Six years. Hundreds of formulations. We melted a bucket. A batch bloomed black specks. It cracked, it warped. We went months where the only good news was that one failure had stopped failing.

Then one morning it cured clean. No cracking. No warping. No unwanted reactions. Stone. Sitting in my hand.

I stared at it. I felt it. I marveled at it. It actually felt Supernatural.

What I want for you

I'm not building this so you'll think about chemistry. I'm building it so you don't have to.

I want you to open a jar and find something you have never worked with before — a mineral molding paste and ground that holds a peak, takes a carve, sands to silk, and turns to stone. I want you to breathe freely in your own studio. I want the work you make to outlast you, in service to the planet.

Supernatural, PBC is a materials innovation company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each product made from the patented formula captures carbon dioxide from the air as it cures. From one base material comes many products. The idea behind it: every surface, a carbon sink.
A Public Benefit Corporation is a legal structure, not a marketing label, that legally requires the company to balance financial returns with its mission to protect people and the planet. Supernatural chose it because it reflects how the company was already being run, and it signals to every customer, partner, and investor that the values aren’t negotiable.
Supernatural was founded by Alicia Garcia-Romero, an architectural designer and artist who spent her career working with the materials she set out to fix. After years of asking why art, design and construction materials still relied on toxic, plastic-based ingredients when better chemistry was possible, she spent five years on R&D with a materials scientist to build the alternative.
Supernatural’s current product line is The Studio Line, its first product is a mineral texture molding paste and ground for artists, designers, and creators , available now at supernaturalpbc.com. In development is the Built Line, an architectural coatings-focused brand setting out to replace decorative coatings and construction finishing products. All come from the same original mineral–organic base, built with completely different fillers, binders, and aggregates, formulated for their different jobs.
Carbon capture is built into the chemistry: as the mineral–organic material cures, it mineralizes, absorbing CO2 from the air and locking it permanently into calcium carbonate. That’s real stone. The platform also includes biogenic carbon waste, CO2 that was already captured and would be released at end of life. This CO2 stays permanently locked in the mineral matrix rather than released through decomposition. No offsets, no purchased credits — it’s the material doing what the chemistry does.
Supernatural’s carbon model is based on ISO 14040/14044 life cycle principles, and the in-use CO2 uptake as well as biogenic carbon storage reflects real carbonation chemistry. The technology has been reviewed by the UC Berkeley Disaster Lab and recognized by Dr. John Warner, co-founder of the field of Green Chemistry, who called the ability to capture CO2 in everyday materials groundbreaking. The company is committed to transparent, science-grounded claims.
Because the material mineralizes to calcium carbonate, it has a benign end-of-life profile, with no off-gassing and the captured carbon staying locked in. Residual minerals can be repurposed as alkaline soil enhancers or returned to production cycles, so it’s designed to be part of a circular system rather than a landfill problem.
Yes. Supernatural holds a non-provisional patent filed in December 2024, with international acknowledgment through the WIPO Patent Cooperation Treaty, and the PCT’s broadest claims were confirmed as novel. The underlying platform is proprietary. Patent pending.

Supernatural launched on Earth Day 2026, with the Studio Line available now and the Built Line in development.
